Kiptok is starstruck!

We ran into Matt Groening and his son at Amoeba! Yay! But he was buying Battles. Boo! I saw him earlier in the experimental section and he was next to me, looking at Nurse With Wound or Oval or Prurient or something around there. Yay! But he was on the phone and I didn't realize it was him. Boo! My brother told him I don't like the Battles CD. I got to shake his hand! His son likes Man Man too!

"Sacred hamburgers"

Obviously everyone is going to get mad at an article like this, but STILL,

who are the Kooks?????????? Luke Pritchard spends most of his write-up trying to protect himself from all of the attacks that are about to come his way that he writes almost nothing at all about WHY he hates the album. And look at his writing! "I don't think so" "but that's how it is" "apologise"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Oh,"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on, Pet Sounds???

I'm also very mad at Ian Rankin for his VU & Nico review. They PURPOSELY tuned down for most of their songs!!!!!!! Hasn't he heard that Lou Reed and John Cale are friends because Lou Reed tuned his guitar strings to the same note? And the viola in "Venus In Furs" is maybe the best thing in the entire album. Everytime I fall in love with VU more and more for this album and this one alone. Everytime I fall in love with this album, it is 10x deeper than the last time. "Heroin"! "All Tomorrow's Parties"!!! "I'll Be Your Mirror" (I simultaneously empathize with and don't understand my friend Jonno, a diehard VU fan whose favorite track is "Who Loves The Sun" off of Loaded. WTF?)! I visited the Warhol museum on the way from the U.S. Open and all I wanted the entire time was to hear VU & Nico.

The ones I (somewhat) agree with: Nevermind, Is This It, The Doors.

What did I do this weekend

1. I drove to Pittsburgh and back (most of the trip). We listened to Fennesz - Endless Summer, VU & Nico, Chromophobia, Nebraska, The Reminder, Crooked Rain, Blue, Boxer, Songs 3 by Marissa Nadler. My parents' favorite was Marissa Nadler.

2. We went to the third round of the U.S. Open, on saturday. It would've sucked except I had one of these:

"Whoa, is that like a periscope?"
"Do those things actually work?"
"$80 and it's not even worth it ha ha ha."
"Look, it's one of those things!"

If I could put this in Mindy Kaling's blog I would because really why go to a golf event if you just stand behind huge people the entire time. I could even sit sometimes and be able to see as well as all the standers. And I always saw Tiger make that hole or Vijay shoot that drive or whatever.

Girls with guitars and good voices

Following my rekindled Joni Mitchell obsession, I'm now in love with Marissa Nadler. Her voice is beautiful and makes me really teary like Victoria Legrande's does. And while her lyrics aren't super intelligent or anything they're still pretty chilling solely because of her delivery. And now I kind of like this Feist album. It's pretty good! What is the consensus on The Reminder? Also does she play the guitar herself? My one complaint is the two singles kind of suck. I don't really like My Moon My Man and 1234 is O.K. My friend called Marissa Nadler "who Feist wishes she was" but I think that Marissa Nadler is a genius who's really shy and Feist makes her music and she doesn't even know who MN is.

Yea Big + Kid Static @ Main Street Jukebox 6/10/07

I saw two rappers whom I'm not familiar with at all except that they were touring with Rapider Than Horsepower and they were associated with The Mae Shi somehow. Some guy in my town booked this show at our rebuilt record store, the Main Street Jukebox. Yea Big + Kid Static had too much energy for a crowd of about 15. I invited some of my friends, but only 3 showed up. They were fantastic. Yea Big would cue up the beats on his tiny Powerbook, then they would jump and jerk their bodies around with weird rhymes and stage [floor] dives that at one point cut Yea Big's chin open forcing him to rap with a paper towel on his chin for the rest of the show. Something was really lovable about them; they were always smiling and at one point they breakdanced with the audience. Kid Static was obviously the better rapper, often taking entire verses while Yea Big would cue things up with single words or phrases. I don't know how big he is, but I kind of expect him (and Yea Big) to get pretty popular. They usually operate alone, and they only have one 7" with 4 tracks, but still, what a good relationship. These guys should stay together. I can't imagine seeing them apart.

I missed Rapider Than Horsepower. The entire show was about 1.5 hours and RTH played first. I was disappointed, but the guitarist was there afterwards and he translated my Japanese shirt for me. Graffiti artist.

Neato

Smash Bros. Brawl will use 4 different control schemes.

I hope the commercial is like 4 kids:
"Okay, all we have is two Wii remotes, one nunchuk, a Gamecube controller and a classic controller."
"SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL"

The game will be awesome.

New topic

Who has heard this yet? I don't know what the consensus is but I kind of love this album. Top 10 of first 1/2 2007, IMO. (Almost) Every track could be released as a single and my summer is set.

EDIT: Not *quite* as good as I made it out to be. They get old fast.
